Before you book
What is Socials?
Socials is how Detor helps you meet new people in your city. There are three things you can book. A social table is a small table of about six people we put together for you, to eat or drink. An activity meetup is a small group we put together for you, to do one activity, like bouldering, a run, board games or pottery. An event is open to everyone who books, like a quiz night, a party or a class. You can also join a hobby club for free. We tell you when we plan an activity meetup or an event for your club.
What is a social table?
A table of about six people who all came to meet someone new. You book a seat, answer a few questions once, and we choose who sits with you. Everyone pays for their own food and drinks. A social table can be coffee, brunch, dinner, wine or drinks, and each one says which it is.
What is Discover?
In the app, Discover is the second tab. A switch at the top has three parts: Events, Social tables and Activity meetups. Events are things anyone can book. Social tables and activity meetups are the small groups we put together for you.
How do events work?
An event is open to anyone who books, so nobody is matched. The event page says what it is, when, where and the price. We email you the confirmation.
What are Clubs?
Hobby clubs, like running, bouldering or board games. You find them in the app, in the Clubs tab. Joining is free. You tell us which days suit you and your level, and you can leave at any time.
How do activity meetups in a club work?
When enough people have joined a club, we plan an activity meetup on the day that suits most of them, and tell everyone in the club. You book a spot at it the same way you book an event. A club's page lists "This club's activity meetups" and, under it, "Events you might like" about the same hobby.
I have never done this. What is it like?
Everyone at a social table booked to meet someone new, the same as you. You give your table name at the door and the staff have the list. Everyone starts with names and where they are from. After that people just talk. If you would rather not come alone the first time, you can bring one person. You sit at the same table.
Is this a dating thing?
No. Socials is for people who want to meet new people. Many of them become friends, and that is the idea.
How old do I have to be?
Eighteen. We ask for your birth year when you sign up and you have to confirm you are eighteen or over.
What do you ask me, and why?
Which languages you speak, what year you were born, how you describe yourself, what you normally spend on dinner out, what you are like at a table with new people, and what you like talking about. In the app we also ask where you grew up, if you want to say. Then how you eat. We do not ask about allergies or access needs: you tell the venue about those yourself. Last, your phone number, so we can reach you about your table, and whether you want to stay in touch with people afterwards. It takes about a minute. You answer it once.
What do you do with my answers?
We use them to put your table together. The people at your table see your first name and your pronouns. In the app they also see the table as a group: the kinds of work, where people grew up, the languages and an age range, all together and never next to a name. Nobody else sees anything. If you add a photo, only the people at your table see it, and only once you have met: when you have both said you are here, or an hour after the start. There is no bio and nothing to browse, on purpose.
Can I bring a friend?
Yes, you can bring one person to a social table or an activity meetup. You and your plus one are always in the same group. We spread plus ones across the groups, so you still meet new people. A plus one has its own price, which you see when you book.
Where is Socials on?
Open the app to see the cities with something on. Memberships are for Dutch cities only for now.
Your table
Who will I sit with?
People we picked for you from the answers you gave us, who came for the same reason you did. A social table is about six people. A table is never smaller than four or bigger than twelve. We aim for an even mix of men and women, except on a women-only table. Come alone or bring one person. Tables mix people, so if you come often, you may sometimes see a familiar face at yours.
How do you decide who sits together?
We use the answers you gave us. Everyone at your table speaks at least one language you speak. We keep ages close: people within about seven years of each other are a good fit. We look at what people normally spend on dinner, so nobody feels awkward about the bill. We mix quiet people and talkative people, because a table of only quiet people is a hard evening. We try to have a couple of people at every table who have been before. And we try never to seat you as the only woman, the only man, or the only person who speaks your language.
A computer draws the tables forty-eight hours before. Twenty-four hours before we send them out. In between, a person looks at the tables again and can move someone who has ended up in the wrong place.
What if nobody else books?
A night needs at least three bookings to run at all, and a table needs four people to be a table. If too few people book, we call the night off twenty hours before it starts and give everyone their money back. You will get an email and a message in the app. We do not warn you before that, because a night that looks quiet three days before is often full on the day.
When do I find out about my table?
Forty-eight hours before the start we put you at a table and tell you that you are in. Twenty-four hours before we send you the venue, the address and the first names of the people you are sitting with.
When do I get the address?
Twenty-four hours before the start. Until then you know the city, the date and the time. We do this so the table is a surprise to everyone at it in the same way, and so we can still move people around if we need to.
What is "reconfirm your seat"?
When we put you at a table we ask you to reconfirm your seat. It is one tap on a button. You have until the address goes out, twenty-four hours before the start. It tells us the table is planned around people who will actually be there.
What if I miss the reconfirm?
Nothing happens automatically. Your seat goes to a person on our team, who will look at it and decide. If we cannot reach you, we may give the seat to someone else, and we will email you when we do.
I booked after you sent the tables out. What now?
We look for a seat for you. You will get a message saying we are looking, and a time by which you will hear either way. If we find you a seat at a table with room, you get the address like everybody else. If we cannot, we say so and give you your money back. We will not sell you a seat we know we cannot place.
Can my table change after you tell me?
It can. People cancel, and sometimes we have to join two small tables together. If the people at your table change, you get a message. If your table moves to a different venue, or your table is closed and we are finding you another one, we email you as well. Always trust the newest message.
What if the venue is shut, or something goes wrong on the day?
We move your table to another venue and email you the new address. The time stays the same. If you have already left home, open your booking under Bookings: it always shows where you are going now.
When does the group chat open and close?
It opens an hour before your table starts and stays open for two weeks after the night. It is for the people at your table: saying you are at the door, that you will be ten minutes late, or that it was a lovely evening. Phone numbers and handles are hidden in the group chat. Our team reads a chat only if someone reports a message.
On the night
What do I do when I arrive?
Give your table name at the door. The staff have the list. Your table name is on your booking in the app and in the email we sent you.
Where is my seat pass?
In the app: open your booking under Bookings and tap "Your pass". A pass works without signal, and you can add it to Apple Wallet.
When do I see what the others look like?
Before you meet, everyone at your table shows as a drawn face. Once you have both said "I'm here", or an hour after the start, the faces turn into the profile photos people added to their accounts. Only the people at your table see yours, and only if you added one. If one of you blocks the other, neither of you sees the other's photo.
I am at the venue and I cannot find the group.
Ask the staff for your table by name. If that does not work, open the app and use the group chat to say where you are standing. If you still cannot find anyone, use "Report a problem" on your booking and we will help.
What does "I'm delayed" do?
It tells the people at your table that you are on your way and about how long you will be. You pick how late you think you are, up to an hour, and you can add a line like "the tram is stuck, start without me". Everyone at your table gets a message. If you are less than ten minutes behind we do not message them, because ten minutes does not change anything for them. It does not cancel anything and it costs nothing. You can use it from the moment we send the address until two hours after the start.
How long does it last?
About two and a half hours. People often stay longer.
Do I have to eat a full meal?
No. Order what you want. You are there for the people at the table.
What if someone does not come?
The table goes ahead. Afterwards we ask everyone whether everybody came. If you say someone did not, a person on our team looks at it. We never tell the table who said it.
What happens after my table?
Two hours after the start we send you a "Thanks for coming" email. It asks how the night was, who you would like to see again, and whether everybody came. If you have not told us how it was by the next morning, we send one notification at eight to ask.
Can I stay in touch with people afterwards?
Yes, if you both want to. Two hours after the start we ask you to choose the people you would like to see again. Nobody sees what you choose. If you both choose each other, you both get each other's phone number, WhatsApp, email and Instagram, and a private chat for the two of you opens in the app. The choice stays open for fourteen days. You can also give each person up to three kudos, like "Made us laugh" or "Great listener". Kudos are anonymous: people see how many they got, never from whom.
Money
What does it cost?
A seat costs the price shown when you book, and the app always shows it before you pay. A plus one has its own price, shown the same way. On top of that you pay for your own food and drinks at the venue, straight to the restaurant.
What is the seat price for?
Finding you a table, holding the seat, and the work of putting the evening together. It is not a deposit and it is not credit at the restaurant.
Is my first table free?
When we are running that offer, yes: the first table you ever book is free, even with a plus one. An activity meetup counts as a table. An event does not: an event ticket always costs the price shown. The booking screen says so before you pay. After that you pay the price shown when you book.
What is a membership?
A way to pay for seats ahead instead of one at a time. Each plan shows its price, how long it runs and what it includes. When plans are on sale in your city, you find them in the Menu, under Membership. Memberships are for Dutch cities only for now, and you pay by card.
What does a membership include?
Each plan says what it includes: every regular seat, or a number of seats a month. A plan can also limit how many seats you have booked at one time, and it says so when it does. Seats are for social tables and activity meetups only. Some plans also give you a member price on extra seats. A plan of several months carries on month to month at the price shown on it, unless you cancel.
What happens to seats I do not use?
On a plan with a number of seats a month, they do not carry over. The seats start again each month, counted from the day you joined, so seats left over at the end of a month are gone. Membership shows the day they start again. On a plan that includes every seat there is nothing to carry over.
Why did a seat cost the normal price when I am a member?
A plan can limit how many seats you hold with it at one time, and the plan says how many. When you already hold that many for sessions still to come, you can still book another seat: it costs the normal price. Or book it with your plan once one of those sessions has passed, or after you cancel one.
How do I change my plan?
Tap your photo at the top right, then Membership. If you see "Change plan", you can move to a longer plan there. You pay the price of the new plan, less the days you have not used of your current plan. The new plan starts the same day, and the seats you have booked stay booked. To move to a shorter plan, cancel first. Your plan runs until the end of the period you paid for. After that you can join the other plan.
How do I cancel or withdraw from a membership?
Sign in and choose your photo at the top right, then Membership. "Cancel at period end" stops it renewing: it stays until the end of the period you paid for. Within 14 days of joining you can withdraw instead: it ends straight away and you get back what you have not used, on the card you paid with.
What is a seat pack?
Seats you buy up front and use one booking at a time. Each pack says how many seats are left and the date to use them by. Its seats work for regular social tables and activity meetups in the cities the pack names, and you pay by card. Within 14 days of buying you can withdraw and get the unused seats back.
What if I cannot come?
Cancel your seat: open your booking under Bookings. Do it as soon as you know, so we can give the seat to someone else. If you cancel more than twenty-four hours before the start, you get your money back. Less than twenty-four hours before, you do not. An event ticket works the same way: cancel it more than twenty-four hours before the start and you get your money back.
How do I get my money back?
It goes back to the card you paid with. You do not have to ask. The message telling you your seat is cancelled also says what is happening to the money.
What if you cancel my table?
You get all your money back, whatever the reason and whenever it happens. That covers a night called off because too few people booked, a table we had to close, and the times we could not find you a table you would enjoy.
Do you take promo codes?
Yes. There is a code box on the booking screen, above the pay button, and the code comes off at checkout.
Do I tip, and who pays the bill?
You pay your own bill at the restaurant, the way you would on any night out. Tipping is up to you.
Safety
What if I feel unsafe?
If you are in danger, call 112 first. There is an SOS button on your booking, under Bookings. Hold it, and we alert our team and your emergency contact. If you have not given us an emergency contact yet, the app asks you for one.
How do I report someone?
Open your booking under Bookings and tap "Report a problem". You can report the venue or a person at your table. In the table chat you can also tap "Report" next to something they wrote. Only the Detor team reads it, and we never tell anyone who reported them.
Can I block someone?
Yes, in the app: tap their face in your table chat, then "Block". You will not see their messages or their photo, they cannot write to you in a private chat, and we will not seat you at the same table again. They are not told.
What happens after I report someone?
A person on our team reads it, usually the same day. We can take someone off a table, stop them booking again, or ban them. We will tell you what we did.
Who sees my allergies?
We do not ask about allergies, and we do not pass them on to the venue. Each guest is responsible for their own. Tell the venue yourself, before you go or when you arrive, and check with the staff before you order. If you told us about an allergy before, the people at your table do not see it.
I have access needs.
Tell the venue yourself, before you go or when you arrive, for example if you need step-free entry or a quieter spot. We do not ask about access needs, and we do not promise to pass them on to the venue. Once you have the address, you can check with the venue before the day.
Do you check who comes?
Everyone books with a Detor account and pays with a card, and we read every report. You give your details to us. The people at your table never see them.
Your account
How do I change my photo?
In the app: tap your photo at the top right to open Profile, then tap the photo there. Only the people at your table see it, once you have met.
How do I change my answers?
Sign in and open Table preferences. Change what you like. A change counts from your next table, not one you have already been matched for.
How do notifications work, and can I turn them off?
We send you the things you need to know about your table: you are in, here is the address, a reminder a few hours before, and anything that changes. Those come by email and to your phone. You can turn off anything else in the app: tap your photo at the top right, then "Notification settings". Turning them all off is fine, but then you have to open the app to see your address.
We do not send anything to your phone between ten at night and eight in the morning, on your own clock, unless your table starts within two hours. Anything else that happens in those hours waits until eight.
I forgot my password.
Tap "Forgot password?" on the sign in page. We email you a link to set a new one. The link works once and then stops.
How do I delete my account?
Write to support@godetor.com from the email address on your account and ask us to delete it. An admin handles it within a month of the day you ask, and then your account and your details are anonymised. Bookings you have already paid for are dealt with first.
Where do I find the terms?
The terms, the privacy note and the house rules are linked at the bottom of every page, and in the app in the Menu. You agree to the Socials terms when you book your first seat.
How do I get in touch?
Write to support@godetor.com. If it is about a table tonight, use "Report a problem" on your booking under Bookings: that reaches a person fastest.
Still need an answer?
Write to us and a person will answer. If it is about a table tonight, use "Report a problem" on your table page.
