An evening in Paris when you are on your own
Last updated 31 October 2026
Paris is a good city for a free evening alone. Four services seat you at a dinner table with people you have not met, in French or in English; a language evening that costs one drink runs twice a week until the small hours, Tuesdays included; and some museums open late for nothing on set evenings. Copy the local rhythm: apéro from about 18:00, dinner at 20:00, when the tables below sit down.
1. Dinner with strangers: four ways
- Socials by Detor, this site. We seat four to six people who have not met at one table for dinner, drinks, coffee or brunch, in English or in French. The group is chosen from a few answers you give once and checked by a person; we book the venue and send the address the day before; until then the others see only your first name and pronouns. A seat is priced per session, no membership, and everyone pays the venue for their own bill. Over-18s; visitors book like anyone else. What is open this week is under "On this week" below and on the Paris page.
- Timeleft: dinners for four to six on Wednesdays and Fridays at 20:00, drinks on Thursdays at 19:00, themed dinners on Mondays (women- and LGBTQ+-friendly) and Tuesdays (singles), in French or English. It needs a subscription, booking closes 13 hours before, and you pay the venue for your own meal.
- Strangrs: Paris only, in French. A dinner for four to six from around 20:00, plus drinks, coffee and a walk; first names and address arrive a few hours before.
- Dixner: tables of six to ten with a host, menu and drinks included in its main offers; Paris press describes a set dinner in a private room.
2. Free tonight
Sortiraparis is the listings site Parisians open for tonight; the list at godetor.com/city-happenings/paris gathers what costs nothing this week. Sortiraparis lists a free Louvre evening on the first Friday of the month and a free late opening at the Bourse de Commerce on the first Saturday; confirm both on the museum's own site.
3. Evenings built for talking
- A language evening, Tuesdays and Saturdays. Polyglot Club's evenings run from 20:00 until 02:00; entry is free, you buy a drink, and the current venue is on its Meetup page. No French is needed: someone there wants to practise English.
- An English trivia night. La Pomme d'Eve lists one on Wednesdays at 20:30; the listing is undated.
- A walking tour. GuruWalk lists a pay-what-you-want tour of the historic centre; its page showed recent cancellations.
4. Where to go for an evening out
Oberkampf, République and the Canal Saint-Martin are the lively night streets in the Paris je t'aime guide, with the most bars along the Quai de Jemmapes. Routard adds Bastille-Oberkampf and the Marais; Belleville is cheaper.
5. Practical
- Evenings start late: the apéro is drinks from about 18:00 to 20:00, the strangers' tables sit at 20:00, the language evening runs past midnight.
- Say bonjour first. Newcomers' guides call Parisian reserve protective, not hostile; the greeting opens it.
- Tipping and the last metro: no reliable source read; check on the day.
6. If you are on your own
- Book one table for your stay; the address comes the day before.
- Go to the language evening even with no French; it exists for practising.
- Take the apéro on a terrace; an hour alone with a drink is normal Paris.
Socials' Paris tables are in English and in French; the ones open this week are on the Paris page.

Questions people ask
What can I do in Paris tonight for free?
Check Sortiraparis and the godetor.com free-things list. Museums open late for nothing on set evenings; the Louvre's is listed as the first Friday of the month, so confirm on its own site. A language evening costs one drink.
Do I need French to meet people in Paris?
No. Socials holds tables in English, Timeleft lets you choose English, the Polyglot Club evening mixes languages, and the trivia night is in English. French helps with French friends over time; a bonjour opens every exchange.
Where do I meet people in Paris in a few days?
The language evening is the quickest: twice a week, one drink, and everyone there came to talk. A dinner with strangers through one of the four services puts you at a table of four to ten. Expat forums add Meetup groups for internationals.
